History

Merrell was founded in 1981 in the United States with the mission to create the best hiking footwear. It all began with Randy Merrell, a skilled craftsman who handcrafted custom leather boots for mountaineers. Over time, his expertise caught the attention of Clark Matis and John Schweizer, two executives from the ski industry who saw the potential to take his work to a commercial level. Together, they founded the brand and began producing boots that combined artisanal quality with technological innovation, achieving a balance of comfort, durability, and performance on challenging terrain.

Over the decades, Merrell has established itself as one of the leading brands in outdoor footwear, expanding its portfolio beyond hiking boots to include trail running shoes, sandals, technical apparel, and accessories. The company has been a pioneer in developing technologies such as the Vibram® sole for enhanced traction and the M-Select™ system for moisture control and comfort. Additionally, Merrell has taken steps toward sustainability by using recycled materials and implementing low-impact manufacturing processes, aligning with the growing demand for eco-friendly products in the outdoor industry.

Today, Merrell is a global brand with a presence in over 190 countries, recognized for its commitment to adventure and the outdoors. Its philosophy centers on promoting an active lifestyle that’s accessible to everyone, under the motto “Let’s Get Outside.” With strategic collaborations and campaigns that advocate inclusion in outdoor sports, Merrell continues to evolve to meet the needs of new generations of explorers, while staying true to its core values of quality and performance in every product.
